Privacy Policy — Just a Scanner

Just a Scanner is built around a simple idea: your documents are yours. No account. No cloud. No newsletter.
The short version
We do not collect, store, or share any personal data. Everything the app does happens on your device — with one optional exception that you control entirely (see “Optional AI filenames” below).
What happens on your device
- Scanning: The camera is used to capture documents. Images are processed on your device.
- Text recognition (OCR): Performed entirely on-device using Apple’s Vision framework. No text or images are sent anywhere for OCR.
- File storage: Scanned pages and generated PDFs are kept in the app’s own temporary storage on your device and are cleaned up automatically. Documents persist only where you explicitly save or share them (e.g. the Files app, Camera Roll, or a share destination you choose).
- Photos: If you save enhanced photo scans, the app uses add-only access to your photo library. It cannot read or browse your existing photos.
Optional AI filenames
Just a Scanner can suggest descriptive filenames using an AI model. This feature is off by default and only works if you add your own API key (currently supported: Anthropic’s Claude).
If — and only if — you save a key and confirm the consent prompt:
- The recognized text of a document scan is sent to the AI provider to generate a filename suggestion. Images never leave your device.
- This transfer goes directly from your device to the provider. We operate no server in between and never see your documents, your text, or your key.
- The provider processes this data under its own terms and privacy policy (for Anthropic, see anthropic.com/privacy).
- Your API key is stored in the iOS Keychain on your device and can be deleted at any time in Settings. Without a key, filenames fall back to the scan date and nothing leaves your device.
What we don’t do
- No analytics, no tracking, no advertising, no third-party SDKs.
- No accounts, no sign-ins, no user profiles.
- No developer-operated servers. We technically cannot access your documents.
Data retention
We retain nothing, because we receive nothing. Temporary files on your device are removed by the app and by iOS automatically. Documents you exported are under your control in the location you chose.
Children
Just a Scanner does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the app’s data practices ever change, this policy will be updated and the effective date revised before the change ships.
